So I picked up this book to hopefully learn about how Starbucks conducts business, so that I can use those lessons in my own business.
However, I didn't find this book to be much help at all. The lessons are far too abstract to have meaning in the day to day operation and planning of a business. Principles like "Make your Mark" and "Surprise and Delight" are great general principles to aspire to, but they are presented in a format that reads like a Starbucks training manual.
But many of the examples are almost comical in the way its paints Starbucks as a saintly company. Nice to know that a partner who won the lottery shared it with her co-workers, but what does that tell me about HOW Starbucks created a culture of sharing; could this partner just be a really good person, while another partner might have kept the whole jackpot to himself.
The employees meet expectations of their customers as the third place and it goes beyond getting a hot cup of coffee or icy frappuccino. It means making contact with the customer by smiling and asking about their day and the ritual of writing their name on their cup and remembering their order if they are a regular. It means surprising them by connecting with them on a deeper level with humor and compassion whenever possible.
It means offering a fair trade product and be involved in the community that Starbucks thrives in and making it a better place for those businesses around them. It means offering health insurance to part time employees and understanding the Starbucks experience means extraordinary commitment to excellence above and beyond their product.
Although I won't be owning a business anytime soon, this books gives solid insight into the many principles that make Starbucks so successful. Meanwhile, I've found that I could use the principles in this book for my everyday life. I want to make the experience in my club to be a pleasant one, and Starbucks has mastered that. There's no reason to copy another organization completely. It's important to create your own unique environment.
A little introduction and explanation, some examples and stories, and then a final checklist of things to remember. Thoughtful, brief, and understandable. The checklist is worth of making a copy to post on your desk. Whether you're a business CEO, leader, student, or just a regular employee, this book will help you realize that you can make a difference sooner rather than later. One person found this helpful. Michelli uses Cracker Jack as an example: He discusses his theory that people these days hope to be dazzled in every experience, and the best surprises are natural and spontaneous - the effect of seeing a need and filling it immediately.
He reminds the reader, too, that even though breakdowns in the business can potentially occur, delight can come from how efficiently and easily these breakdowns are fixed. The fourth observation, Embrace Resistance is closed with this idea: Nothing in nature grows without facing limiting forces. The author believes that one must learn the skills needed to face these forces and see the business and relationship opportunities that may be garnered from overcoming them. Michelli again emphasizes the importance of correcting mistakes and misinformation quickly and efficiently, taking direct responsibility for the errors made, and subsequently taking corrective action.
The authors last principle is that every company should leave [its] mark. This section focuses on the community aspect of every company, and how being an active member of the community will help business.
Business owners should realize, however, that this communityminded business model is ultimately not just the right way to do business, but the only way.
Community activities can serve as team -building activities for employees, and also send out a positive image of the company as a whole. Even though The Starbucks Experience uses just one corporation as an example, the ideas in the book can be applied to any business, and even some personal aspects of life, too. The book is laid out in a comprehensive format, divided into sections for easier reading.
Michelli keeps the tone light throughout the book, offering many anecdotes and interesting insights into the nuances of Starbucks, but never sacrifices education for entertainment. Although Michelli can appear subjective when describing the companys many successes, one can tell that he might just be charmed by Starbucks philosophy of business.
